Lee, commander in chief of the Confederate Army. Details: Of the medals reverse, sculptor Donald De Lue wrote: "The conflict of the War between the States by two men on horseback, engaged in mortal combat, brother arrayed against brother. The broken chain at the horses feet is the symbol of the broken Union. I have used the symbol of fighting men and horses as an allegory of combat and war, brother against brother."
