Some really great additions! I just picked up this antique bronze Freedom Train medal. Couldn't pass it up. Brings back memories of ducking out of work one morning so that I could put a penny on the tracks as this monster came chugging by. What a site, with black smoking pouring out of it and the ground shaking as it went by.   |

picked up this old German religious medal a few weeks ago Cast silver medal, 1534, school of Hieronymus Magdeburger (active 1520 - 1540). Fire gilded and mounted in contemporary pendant setting . Diameter 49,2 mm. 19,42 g. Katz vgl. 127. GPH vgl. 9. OBV: Jesus betrayed by the kiss of Judas GIOT GRVS DICH MEISTER VND KVSSET IN MATTHEI 26. // 1534. Been getting lucky with some nice finds lately and great bargains on them. This is one I just got in-hand. 1789 - British halfpenny token - George, Prince of Wales D&H Middlesex (National Series) 970 Listed as R rarity (pg. 187) AE / 26.1mm / 6.6g. gVF (VF+) with glossy surfaces. Slightly oval planchet and weak central strike as seen on other known examples. Straight milled edge with offset reeding. Obv: The prince's bust left / "PRINCE REGENT." A die chip is underneath the C in PRINCE and is present on all examples of #970. Rev: A crown centered with 9 pearls per side / "HE HOLDS IT FOR THE KING". Date of 1789 under a double line ex. which almost touches the legend. Britons being Britons, it didn't take long for enterprising die-makers to copy the obverse die with the Prince's bust while changing the legend to "PRINCESS OF WALES" (Was George amused? Lovely piece.
It is difficult to imagine George III being amused by anything his son got up to. "Prinny" the later George IV, was by many accounts a rake. In one year alone he spent £100,000 on furniture. That would be a lot even today...
This token is dated to the time when the George IV was hoping to become regent, due to his father's bout of insanity. George III recovered and George IV had to wait until 1811 to become regent. Presumably this token was produced by his supporters in anticipation.
