I found this Chinese coin listed on a local online shop (some kind of ebay, not a coin shop). The seller himself is rather trustworthy, from my experience. This coin looks nice. However, as many others may do, I hesitate to buy Chinese coins... So I'd like a second opinion on this -- Is this fake or not? My only concern is the weak letters on the reverse, particularly on the "KW ANG -TUNG" and "T WEN TY". Are they just due to lighting effects, or a weak strike (or greased die?), or even signs of counterfeiting? This one is listed for IDR 125000 (around $9.5), and from the seller's pics, it looks very lightly circulated (in the AU range?). For that price, it seems cheap since Krause lists this coin at $18 for XF40 and $27.5 for MS60. Edited by Guybrush 11/26/2017 11:22 pm

I am by no means an expert but, my opinion is that it's legit. I see no evidence of it being cast and it actually has a slightly misaligned reverse die. I can also see die wear from metal flow. The weak devices may be from a slightly filled die. Are the weight/dimension specs correct? Hopefully others will comment. P.S. Take the Krause values with a grain of salt.

Anything that looks too good to be true usually is. I nearly came to the same conclusion with this coin but I changed my mind, and I am now happy tp give it the benefit of the doubt.
Why? The genuine were coins were not the highest expression the of the then state of the art minting technology. As it turns out, this one isn't either. In addition, and according to Krause, these coins suffered from greatly varying fineness.
Also, Weak strike on reverse legends. So, in my opinion, it's genuine. This type common, the fakers would be more attracted to faking rarer types.
In nice condition, but the patina is quite pasty. Has been treated with a dilute corrosive cleaner? THAT gives some cause to doubt.

Thanks for your thoughts, and sorry for the late reply. The bad weather really screws up the mobile phone signal. Quote: Are the weight/dimension specs correct? The seller didn't provide these details, he usually only do for certain coins (e.g. Indian Rupee). Quote: Has been treated with a dilute corrosive cleaner? THAT gives some cause to doubt Thanks for pointing this out, I've asked the seller about this. If he claims uncleaned, I'll have a go with this coin.

This is somewhat a common coin so don't stress too much about it. I'm sure another one will pop up some day.

Don't be embarrassed. There are big victories and minor victories. Likewise, there are big losses and minor losses. The minor losses sting, too. There will certainly be many more interesting things to come along!
