I purchased this 1801 2 Reales from the Mexico City Mint and noticed some extra metal under the you in CAROLUS.

There is also some raised metal off the bottom of the R and A in GRATIA.

Any ideas what this is? Thanks for your help.

Die chips. Small pieces broke off from the dies that struck the coin and metal flowed into those spaces when the coin was struck.
