Doubt if it is a "mint assist since reverse is flattened penny. looks like something was pressed hydraulically (lots of pressure) to smear the image and flatten details that much. If someone had that mechanism, they could have made a pressed die and then re-pressesed it on an existing penny. Man-made, not an error. Not "stamped on wrong planchet. And not a " Magician's coin either.

Someone's experiment with a "soft die" of a 5-cent reverse... the flattened rims on the 1c reverse are a dead giveaway...
A cool conversation piece though...

It really didn't surprise me to see this coin sell north of $100.

Absolutely ridiculous... I imagine we'll see more fabricated in the near future, with folks hoping to turn 6 cents into $100...

hopefully the winning bidder knew what they were bidding on. considering it sold for over $100 I doubt they did. pity.

It's weird that the seller added this note a full two days before the auction ended: "Just putting the word out there...this coin is a fake error. Someone is going to be terribly disappointed with their purchase."
...and yet it still sold for that much. Possible that the winner placed their high bid before that note. Equally possible (nay, likely) that some bidders don't read the full description.

From the listing Quote: CERTAINLY COULD BE SOME SORT OF FAKE BUT STILL INTERESTING
I have received a note from a eBayer (included) if anyone who has made a bid wishes to cancel it based on this letter please do so
On Dec-02-17 at 13:45:16 PST, seller added the following information: Hi Just putting the word out there...this coin is a fake error. Someone is going to be terribly disappointed with their purchase.
How do you prevent stoopid? "Caveat Emptor" is quite clear here. Should ebay be responsible for protecting buyers from their own greed and ignorance?

Considering that I reported the listing and they chose to ignore it speaks volume about ebay. The only thing that came out of reporting it was email from ebay asking me for feedback on the latest contact that I had with them, asking if my issue was taking care of to my satisfaction. Hell no!
