This is one coin that I've *truly* treasured for years. I suspect it's one of the early counterfeits of the loonie. I'm nuts for this coin specifically because it's (I believe) fake! At least I hope it is. Lew, since you seem to know your loonies, maybe you can help me on this one too. It's unfortunate that my phone takes such terrible pictures, because the silliness of the rendering makes me laugh every time I pull it out. Doesn't really do it justice. . It's so bad that it's good

The 1987 counterfeit loon is well known, it has the detached beak, etc., and came out of Edmonton. I am not aware of one that date...
If it is an actual modern counterfeit, bear in mind that it is illegal to possess.

well it's not like I plan on selling or spending it. There is a chance that it's not fake too, just a horribly bad coin.

Why do you think it is fake? Looks like it might have spent some time in a harsh environment, but otherwise seems OK.

The eye, bill, back, and ends of water lines don't look correct. Alan has a good point, better pics. Never seen one like this. Interesting.

Ill try to get some better ones up there. If you'll notice the loon's back, the way it's punched in like a checkerboard pattern. Not at all typical. Also the queen's pointy chin and the lack of detail in the hair.

If it is an actual modern counterfeit, bear in mind that it is illegal to possess. Actually the fake IS a 1990 date; I am to this point unaware of a 1987 fake. I have a pretty clear recollection of when this hit the news because of the proximity of where they were produced, to where I live(d). The "new" obverse was made to look worn to hide the poor details, and the loon's beak noticibly detached... I aqquired one from my mom's (at the time) boyfriend who worked at a local Co-Op; the story goes that the RCMP were going around collecting these fakes, and he grabbed one for my collection. I understand that it's actually illegal to be in possession of these because they are fake, but where it gets a little grey, is why it's illegal; IIRC the principal reason why it's illegal to have these, is because tyou could try to pass it off as legit. I also came across one of those fake toonies that were being produced outside of Montreal(?) years ago in my change... The only problem I have with these coins, is that I don't have a proper spot for them in my 'lighthouse' books ;) I too like the loon, but because of the legal side of things, these have negligible worth.

Ray (National Pride coin store in Edmonton) always had one in his store to show people, that is where I saw it.
