USSID, Acetone isn't miscible in water - only certain other solvents will mix with it. I wouldn't bother trying to dilute it anyway since it won't harm most coins at full strength (not sure about copper coins at long duration.) If you're diluting another coin dip, what specifically are you using?

Bump111- Yes, understand acetone will not dissolve/dilute with water. I guess my point was that I acetone then rinse with distilled water. I use eZest coin cleaner but I dilute that and go very slow then rinse again with distilled water.

Tom , I make it a rule never to dip a coin that is less than Mint State , even if your meticulous with the dip. BTW if your thinking about buying that first 36-D you will have to pay tax on it .

Quote: Acetone isn't miscible in water My understanding is that acetone is 100% miscible with water. That is why we use it for drying coins after rinsing with distilled water. The water dissolves into the acetone and then is carried off a few seconds later as the acetone evaporates off. But since acetone has no effect on the toning or metal of a coin, there is no reason to dilute it before using it on coins.

Condor is correct - I was mistaken. Sorry about that. Acetone will dissolve in water very well. Don't know what I was thinking

Dipping a coin once in a while is ok. Not sure if you were planning to buy above coins, and dipping them, or just using them as an example of possibly dippable coins. I wouldn't dip either one fwiw.

Yes, I guess I'm looking for good examples of what you guys would consider good candidates for dipping. And yes, I was considering buying one of these. I only need the 36-D and 32-D. Unfortunately, these guys are getting pricy at these grade levels. 95% of my Dansco is Mint State/brilliant white with a few mixed in toners. Quote: I wouldn't dip either one fwiw. Thank you.

As for the use of e-Z-est, it is not for me. I would prefer to find the coin that I want as is. However, if you enjoy the challenge, there is nothing wrong with that as long as you are aware of the risks.

Quote: A NEW DOCTOR IS IN THE HOUSE. You seem to be confused on what you want to post. It's okay, take your time. In the meantime, let me tell you a little story. I had a toned/tarnished (ugly) 1935-D Washington quarter in an old ANACS white soap bar slab graded AU-58. I broke it out and slowly/gently dipped it using a Qtip and 50/50 eZest and distilled water. It came out brilliantly white. I resubmitted it to PCGS and it came back MS62. I got lucky.

I simply don't buy coins that need possible remediation.
For those who enjoy doing so I hope you practice on less valuable examples first.

I wouldn't dip the first, but might dip the second.
