*** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. Titles are Important! ***

This is a GREAT forum that has helped me immensely in going through THOUSANDS of coins I inherited. I have almost completed going through Lincoln pennies and was hoping for someone to tell me if this is completely normal to see the zinc showing through around the mint mark on the attached penny photo. For a split moment I thought I had finally come across a doubled die coin! Thanks in advance!

Yes it is very common on Zincolns to see Zinc showing through at spots, yours is no different and it is caused by * split plating*

Yes, it happens quite frequently. It's called split-plating and is caused by a copper layer that is too thin or high striking pressure (or both).

Even with the zinc showing, that's still a pretty nice-looking coin IMO.
