Felix Schlag who was the German designer who won the $1,000 prize to design the new coin around 1863 and knowingly did not put his initials on the coin; if I'm not mistaken, just before the end of the Civil War. The nickel was produced because so many people were hoarding precious metal coins and basically stopping the economy for moving. Even though nickel is not considered a precious metal people still hoarded them for up to four years after they started making nickels and it wasn't until 1866 when they started to circulate more freely in the economy. They kept mr. Schlag design up until the westward expansion nickels which afterwards you can now find his initials to the right of the Monticello, along with two more initials on the jacket of the presidential portrait, one on the upper left near the shoulder, and one on the very bottom of the coin next to his collar on the right hand side.
