I would be afraid to pay for an uncertified 1916-D. They're commonly faked. They're also extremely popular so the dealers would have an advantage to get more money by slabbing them (ANACS or ICG they can submit without joining so it's not that hard). So I would think that a lot of them have problems that prevent them from getting certified. Plus it's ebay so the prices are going to increase more than somewhere else(especially on a desirable key). What grade are you looking for and how much are you willing to pay? Are you OK with problem coins? My quick opinions on the auction coins: 1. Looks like it has an old cleaning. Seems too bright and it looks like it has hairlines but the pictures are bad...maybe this was done on purpose? 2. Hairlines might be a good pock piece though. 3. This one has a lot of scratches on the obverse(kinda hard to see but it's on the face) and on the reverse. 4. D looks weird and I'm not so sure about the color(might be like that because it looks like it was scanned) 5. Nick on chin and possibly cleaned?

Perhaps if you are going to be spending big money, it might be safest to go through a reputable dealer with a good return policy, and to purchase one that has been slabbed by PCGS or NGC (or even ANACS) to make sure that it hasn't got altered surfaces or signs of prior cleaning, and also to authenticate it. But of course it is totally up to you, and it depends upon which way you feel most comfortable and confident. Best of luck with your purchase!

Thanks for the opinions, I like #2 the best and have bought from them before so I'll consider it. I only have one dealer near me that has a 16-D in stock. I swing by about once a month, hes only open on the weekends and is very out of touch with common prices such as ebay. He will want 900+ for an AG-3 in his opinion, when I can get a PCGS G-4 for the same amount. Thats why I wanted to buy raw, better coin for less money.

question: if ANACS graded it does that mean it was damaged? Or they just simply do both undamaged and damaged coins?

Yup, PCGS grades damaged and non damaged coins. You can tell because on their slab it will list the grade and it will say details on it and list the problem(s) with the coin. Also, have you tried going to any shows to look for a 1916D or look on teletrade, heritiage, stacks, etc?
Edit: If I had to pick from those 5, I would also choose #2. I like how it looks.

You should get a legit coin from those sources, but I think you'll often overpay--IMO. If at all possible, I'd find a local dealer you trust and has negotiable prices. There's simply no substitute for inspecting such a key coin in person before you buy. This is the sort of key that people will employ endless tricks to improve marketability--and some get slabbed.

PCGS does not grade problem coins. I would not buy this coin raw from anyone unless you know the diagnostics of a genuine 16-D. If not, stick to certified from either PCGS,NGC,ICG, or ANACS.
