Note it is magnetic enough to be picked up by a magnet

What gives that away? It has been in a piggy bank for 50 years

Cut out the background on those photos or take new photos that can be enlarged. Looking at the photos you present it's impossible to give you help.

It looks plated, right? If so, I've seen these in stores & online, generally part of a pc. of jewelery, in this case cufflinks.

That wouldn't account for it being magnetic though.

If it is silver in color and magnetic then you can be pretty sure it was plated with nickel and if bronze colored also maybe replated with something else

Could it have been some kind of mistake at the mint?

Quote: Could it have been some kind of mistake at the mint? Perhaps, but I am firmly on the side that this coin was plated after it left the mint, thus destroying most of its value.

Would someone playing it have it be magnetic enough to be picked up by a small fridge magnet?

@tony123, yep nickel-plating can be magnetic. Also, I neglected to welcome you previosuly--very glad that you are here on CCF and posting about your coin.
