I would definitely get authentication on any raw gold purchases as counterfeiting is rampant in the coin market

Not my coin but will recommend authentication. It does look good to my eyes, the discolouration is due moreso to the images.

While PCGS grades these pieces they only circulated before 1860, as a substitute for silver coins. They are popular mostly for their association with early California.

Even the early ones that circulated give off a whiff of fraud. They were always underweight and overvalued relative to their gold content. The association with the French jeweler emigres that made them - Nouizillet, Deriberpe, Frontier and Deviercy - adds to the mystique. Cheap and shiny...all that glitters...you can see Hollywood coming in these pieces...
