That's very interesting. Did some type of malfunction with the edge lettering machine happen?

It looks from the lighting, that the extra star is raised, while the normal stars are incuse. To me, this would mean that the extra star was caused by the rim of another coin striking the rim of this coin and transferring the image of a star onto it. I could be wrong, but it seems possible.

I agree. Coin contact bumping along the way created that star.

I think you are right it is not recessed like the other star. That makes sense. Still I think pretty odd for that to happen. Would seem like a very forceful incident.

Letter can also make raised marks on the edges of these coins. But they will be mirrored raised devices.

Thanks Coop! Hey do you have any pictures on the Sacagawea dollar showing the difference in what they call a normal business finish and an almost proof? I have some that are very mirror like and other that are satin or frosted finish. both uncirculated.

Dave42 is correct, contact with the edge of another coin.
