Are any of you content with just collecting circulated coins? Or are you in the uncirculated camp? Or perhaps you collect a series of both?

Most collectors use a want list. Many develop them to the point that they list the grade they are looking for as well as a target price range for each coin. Someone attempting to put together a complete variety set of Draped Bust Half Dollars could not find some of those varieties in uncirculated regardless of the money they had to spend. If you were collecting LMC, on the other hand, you would be nuts NOT to collect uncirculated. The answer to your question is specific to what is being collected.

I am perfectly content myself with circulated grades. I enjoy imagining where they might have been, who's pocket they might have rested in, etc. To me, that's more important than the coin's intrinsic worth. One of the first classic coins I acquired years ago is an 1863 circulated IHC which I am certain was in Abraham Lincoln's pocket when he gave the Gettysburg Address.

I am just starting to piece together a circulated pre-1960 Jefferson nickel set. I'm sure at some point I will work on an uncirculated set.

Myself and many collectors start as just finding and collecting whatever is available. Then starts the upgrading to better and newer looking coins. Eventually attempting to make a complete Uncirc set. In many cases never happens though.

Most of my coins are circulated. Many of them very heavily circulated. Average grade on my early date large cents is G-4.

When I started my 7070, I knew there was no way that was going to be uncirculated. I started my Lincoln Cent collection as a circulated set but then said, well, the memorials can be uncirculated. Then I said well you know, it wouldn't be that hard to go uncirculated down to 1940, then 1934, then 1928 wasn't that much more of a stretch. Then I said I might as well do the P mints as uncirculated back to 1909 and then by that point, I just decided to go uncirculated for the whole set (with a couple of exceptions so far at least like the 14-D). The pre-1928 D and S mints are pretty challenging.

I prefer to get my coins from circulation, but I also have uncirculated coins for a variety of reasons.

Uncirculated issued coins on most clad coins(1965 and up) is feasible to those even on a tight budget like myself. Problem being the set metal changes (Roosies, Washes) would kill me to get more than nice circulated! Like Kenkat, am working my way backwards on LWCs in a BU, have it to 1934 up plus a few others, Jeffersons are nice mix circ/BU plus proofs.

I love collecting circulated coins especially high grade . It gives me a certain amount of satisfaction if anyone can understand. On the other hand I also have accumulated a bunch of MS-63 TO MS-66 coins from Small Cents to Franklin halves . So yes both circ. and uncirc. is my thing .

Uncirculated is my preference if available ..... since I collect silver I try to purchase certified to avoid counterfeits.

I might be in the minority here but I think a nice circulated pre-1960 Jefferson nickel set would look pleasing. As far as the nickels after 1959 I think there should be little problem putting together an uncirculated set.

I collect both circulated and uncirculated sets. I even include circulated varieties in my uncirculated sets. Oh, did I mention that I also collect proof only sets? Being a coin collector, I collect everything I find that interests me regardless of condition or how the coin was produced.

I have had sets before that had a mix of both simply because of the potential cost of a higher grade so I ended up getting the highest grade I could afford. I think this time around I'm gonna put together a set of both circulated and uncirculated nickel sets.

Preference: depends on which set and what my end goal is for a that set. So a mix of both I suppose.

Unless you have incredibly deep pockets, if you collect classic coins/series you'll probably have to settle for circulated examples much of the time.
