I went to the stationery & office supplies earlier today and noticed that these acrylic sign holders may be a good coin display. These make a good desk decoration at the office, don't they? More experimenting: bare coins without 2x2. The coin certainly looks better without 2x2 , but it has a much higher risk of scratches, since 2x2 has larger area (thus smaller pressure) and has protective mylar too. Also, I spent some extra time at the store to choose the ones that have wider gaps at the top bend (the width of the gap varied). The wider gaps reduce the pressure to the coins, and even allow thicker coins to be put in there. So IMO these acrylic stands may be a good choice for displaying large, yet not so valuable coins. What do you think? Edited by Guybrush 12/12/2017 02:46 am

Good options for a coin show, where you want to present the coins that you want to move. Otherwise I'm not sold on it.

I think it's an interesting idea for the purpose. The best may be a Mylar flip cut in two and display the coin within the flip half, within the acrylic stand. The 2x2 in the stand doesn't make for a nice presentation.

@spruett that's a good idea, maybe even better to glue the (empty) flips to the display, so that multiple coins can be put into a single display. Putting multiple coins seem to be impractical without glued flips.

Perhaps better with glue sealed 2x2's, rather than stapled ones. A label printer would also help with presentation.
The acrylic stands can be sealed around the edges with acetone used as a solvent/weld, but that requires LOTS of skill and patience. Perhaps an insert can be cut from clear acrylic sheet, recovered from food packaging.
Selotape can be used as a temporory measure, until the acetone dries.

That's interesting idea, sel. My intention is just a temporary display stand, but I may conisder experimenting with sealing it too. Actually I just tried using stapled 2x2 without staples (i.e. just folded). It works since the cardboard (not the coin -- had confirmed it with a sheet of paper able to go on top of the coin) gets squeezed by the acrylic plates. Looks quite good IMO as a non-permanent display.

That looks pretty nice. Are you considering this for displaying at a show or just a personal display?

Staples would also scratch the acrylic.
