Hello, I have a few things to ask about this set

Aussie-Pre-Decimal-Coins-Set---Just-A-Tourists'-Souvenir?
Aussie-Pre-Decimal-Coins-Set---Just-A-Tourists'-Souvenir?

As with most of my coins, I inherited this set from my aunt. Here's what I wanna know about:

1. It doesn't have any numismatic value beyond the individual coins, does it? It think it's a kind of tourist souvenirs in airports (it still has the original label of $19.95) so the set itself bears no numismatic value. If so, then I'll put the coins into 2x2's and use the cardboard to house a decent, pre 1945 typeset (way to go!)

2. The coins appear to be cleaned. Was this the (whoever) seller's attempt to attract tourist buyers, or was this not the seller's wrongdoings? (Which means - my aunt's) But hey if this is just a souvenir then most likely it was already cleaned by the seller right?

3. Do the coins have any chance to have any particular variety or other interesting stuff? (I doubt any variety, if any, would be impossible to identify due to the coins' condition) The 1/2p is 1961, 1p is 1956, 3p is 1964, 6p is 1960, 1s is 1961 and 2s is 1958.

Thanks a lot mate appreciate it

I think you'd be better off to leave it as it is.Being cleaned and different dates it would be worthless if opened, except for the silver value. That is just my opinion.

With the coins all being different dates, it can't really even be called a set, although I suppose it could be called a 'type set' of QEII coins.

With the price tag of $19.95 still attached, it's an indication that it was probably assembled post 1966, so if it was mine I would be inclined to move the coins into 2x2's and replace them with a decent, pre 1945 typeset.

I guess it all depends on how sentimental your feelings are regarding your Aunt.

@airgem that is a good point. An aspect of the value is that those coins are put together many years ago as a souvenir "type set". I agree on that.

@Nevol I am not attached to the set itself so I'll move the coins. Just got a rather nice 1943D trey

Make sure that none of the silver coins are showing any signs of toning. If they are the box may not be too kind to silver coins.

Now that you mention it, actually there are some light-brown colored tone on the silver coins on the "set"

Does this mean I must think twice before putting the good coins in the cardbowrd holder?

If the coins you planned to place in the box are in nice condition, I think it might be best not to expose them to a potentially 'bad' situation, (possibly the glue that holds the box together).

Maybe leave it as it is and keep it as a memento of your Aunt.
