I read where they made some brass pennies in 1942 when they removed the tin so they could use it for the war effort. Is this one of those pennies?

Bras is just one step up from bronze, the normal composition. It may be, or just discolored funny. Brass if I recall is adding more zinc less manganese and tin. Technically there was more"brass" in the 44-46's, the shell case cents. Weight should be neglidgable.

try soaking a Wheaties in Tarnix overnight...gets reaaallyy mellow yellow...

It's been dip cleaned. Once done a cent never regains a natural tone.

Impossible to tell visually. Would need XRF or Proton Xray Emmission testing to tell for sure.

I lean toward chemical cleaning.

I am inclined to agree with the suggestion that it has undergone some sort of chemical cleaning.
The thick black spots next to and above Abe's ear also make me rather curious.

XRF may be the 'go' for this coin, if you happened to be really motivated to investigate it.
A bullion dealer or a scrap gold jewelry buyer should have a hand held XRF instrument.

Or colored with a highlighter? Nothing special about it.

Even if it is one of the brass ones there is nothing really special about it, it was still just a regular issue.
