I believe this is a Dinar from Wallachia, which was a region of Romania. I'm not overly familiar with these so can't attribute any further but hopefully a step in the right direction.

It's nice to see more medieval coins here. Makes me want to learn more about them.

I call these "chicken coins."

This one is in the style of Wallachian dinars, although I can't find an exact match; it seems to be similar to some issues under Mircea I (the three bars on the shield are in the left quadrant.)

The "chicken" is really an eagle facing left with a cross above.

Yes I agree with @coopertron5000 and @paralyse. It was minted in Wallachia in medieval Romania between 1383 and 1386 AD under the authority of Mircea I ("The Elder"). I think that the denomination is actually a ducat.

I figured denar @ 15mm, but the ducat was not much larger at 16mm, so it could swing either way, although I tend to trust Spence quite a bit more than myself.

Adam, I think that you are giving me too much credit. I have my silver coin of Mircea I labelled as a ducat, so I just assumed that the OP's coin was one too. I don't have a good reference book for these medieval Romanian coins.
