New member..new coin collector...new coin collector question... Is an ANACS pr70 2008 american eagle the same coin as a proof 2008 american eagle coin purchased directly from the US Mint? Thank you for your expertise. I am on a steep learning curve right now!

It is on and the same however the ANACS one has been certified, authenticated and slabbed with the highest possible grade of a proof coin being PF70

Welcome to the forum docmarc.

If you are considering purchasing a 2008 Proof ASE, go for the ungraded one. It will cost you less money and since this is proof coin, there are more PR70s out there. Proof Eagles that receive the highest grade are not uncommon.

Welcome docmarc:
I just got back into collecting last fall after a 30 year absence. There is a lot to learn - just keep reading and asking questions.

About the ANACS american eagle vs. US Mint - it is the same except grading firms like ANACS, PCGS, NGC, ICG, etc. charge to grade and slab (encapsulate) which usually adds value. PCGS & NGC are the top TPG (third party graders) with ANACS & ICG a distant 3rd and 4th. Forget any other TPGs as scams.

Good Luck!

Are you planning on buying this coin from one of those TV coin shows? If so stop. A ANACS PF70 is not going to be worth much. If you want a true one that will hold it's value go with one graded by PCGS. But they can't tell the difference between the different grades that high up, so just one one directly from the mint.

Do folks actually buy that overpriced junk?

J/K
I know they do. My family used to buy me gifts from
that source. I struggled with the question of hurting
their feelings and saving them money, or just taking
the gifts and keeping quiet. Eventually I told them,
and feel better for doing so, than not. It was my Mom
and grandma after all. Could'nt watch these fools rob
them. Maybe an uncle or cousin... but not mom!
