This is true, but on our morning, they sent an email, inviting to view new Jan RCM release

But probably yes, forgot to update something, while sending mail

I have never, ever seen such little interest in the issue of RCM's coins. My resolution, this year, is to pick only the ones, if any, that may retain their value; otherwise, I am buying zilch. The January releases are boring and RCM has still not adjusted the mintages on coins.

I noticed that the animals in the moonlight new series, starting with the polar bear, has no custom packaging like previous issues. I will not continue this series due to this factor. Oh I know what most of you think about the "custom packaging" that I go on and on about; however, to me, it means everything when I have all the previous ones in this series with custom packaging. I was also blown away by Gatewest and their big discounts offered on so many coins that I have decided no more.

RCM is missing the boat. They need to reduce the mintages on their coins in order to make them more appealing to buyers because I do not want anything now with a mintage of 3,000 or more. Even 3,000 is too high. The supposed Master Club Coins were being sold at most dealers and that is so sad.

The excitement has been snuffed out by RCM. I have learned a very big lesson as to not press the "buy" button in the coming year. This forum is a mirror reflection of the fatigue with the non ending boring issues from RCM. I have not even commented in such a long time and when I was sent the new January release advance notice from both CC&C and RCM, I could not care less. Wow....Another issue of duds.

Well expressed, New1954

I told you the same, couple of years ago, when you were happy to grab nice coins, given good budget

And years back, other people told me the same :)

I still like them, the coins, from RCM, RM, RAM...
but buying almost zero, max 3 coins per year (NCLT I mean).
Btw, the bullion now very nice and affordable to collect.

So....for an update:
The Coin Shoppe finally listed new release (as pre-release, you must to login).

My favorite:
NORSE FIGUREHEADS: NORTHERN FURY

My disappointment:
Cut in half Caribou aka CARIBOU - TIMELESS ICONS

And finally I like our south Ontario winter.
This is what it suppose to be. Cold. Bold. Snowy

Happy New Year everyone!

In 2017, the Canada 150 theme was a huge. Now I'm relieved as the Canada 150 fever is finally over, allowing me to spend much less on coins this year - and in coming years.

For the January 2018 releases, I'm not going to buy any silver coins. The silver coins are generally too expensive, compared to silver price. And they are not very interesting.

My attention is on two gold coins.

1) Canadian Coastal Symbols ($2,699.95 each for subscription)

I like the woodcut design, the mintage, and the 99.999% gold.

From a value perspective, a gold coin is a much safer bet than a silver one. Because 63% of the $2700 price tag is current gold price, versus 20% for silver.

However, RCM could repeat the 3-coast theme as often as it wants. That's what worries me.

I haven't made my decision yet on this series. It's on my watch list.

2) Early Canadian History: First Nations

Personally I feel this theme can reach more buyers, compared to the previous historical figure theme. Additionally, the value is great, as 69% of the price tag is gold price.

With a mintage of 1,000, this coin won't be sold out soon. So it's on my watch list.

@YesOrNo: I commend you on your thoughtful approach to collecting RCM NCLT - it's always prudent to understand the level of inherent value risk when purchasing modern collector coins. Some collectors get caught up in the marketing hype and do not fully consider the risk and then are forced to learn a hard lesson after the fact.

You mentioned you liked the "woodcut design" of the gold Canadian Coastal Symbols coin, you might also like the Untamed Canada Series released by the RCM in 2013-14. The set included designs featuring an Arctic Fox, Pronghorn and Wolverine, and was available in silver and 99.99% gold (1/4 ounce). All of the designs are in the woodcut style.

I'm looking forward to receiving my 2018 SDs - when they arrive, the two new coins will bring my total 36mm SD count to 133! I've been collecting them for over 20 years and still enjoy adding the new releases to my set.

I always look forward to the first release of the new year. It tends to feature the RCM's most traditional releases - the commemorative silver dollar, the commemorative gold $100 coin and the annual uncirculated coin set. Familiar friends to this more traditional collector!

Speaking of the $100 coin, I couldn't help but notice that the new coin commemorating the birth of Tecumseh bears a striking resemblance to the $4.00 silver coin (and 25-cent circulation coin) released in 2012 as part of the RCM's War of 1812 bicentennial series. It turns out that Bonnie Ross is the artist/designer of both releases and the new coin appears to be a refresh of her 2012 design. The new coin features a bit more detail in the figure of Tecumseh (his clothing mostly) and, in hindsight, makes the 2012 portrait appear a bit unfinished.

I stopped buying NCLT about a year or so ago. It hasn't stopped me from looking though.
If I see a coin I really like then I will put the asking price of that coin into my children or wife's RRSP.
Almost impossible to lose.

Expensive gold RCM NCLT are worst in terms of value because the market for $2500 coins is very limited. It would be hard to find a buyer for them because they are too expensive. The only buyers for RCM gold would be dealers and they would only pay melt value of 63%.

If you want gold coins get bullion coins instead of NCLT.

10 yrs ago, the only coin bullion that was released from the RCM were maple leafs some with the odd privy mark. These days the bullion releases include wild animals, birds, Canada 150, Voyageur and even a Superman reverse and they are, in general, good looking coins, better in fact than most of the $100 for $100 releases. The bullion coins also have anti-counterfeit artifacts that typically don't exist on NCLT. And the breadth of bullion options is extending to gold as well as the more common silver.

The RCM better be careful as the variety and quality of the bullion coins may cannibalize sales of their NCLT product.

Given the NCLT price lift for silver is 5x the bullion value where as these special bullion issues tend to be 1-3 dollars over the base bullion price, the cost is much easier to justify. This is especially so when the premium for NCLT is evaporating over 2 years these days vs. 5-10 historically.

I have always said that this hobby is about collecting coins for your own reasons but when the financial component is making less sense it becomes harder to pony up.

Personally, I enjoy the traditional (January) offerings (SD $100 Gold & Unc set) so I don't miss a year. The woodcut gold is nice but I will wait for 2-3 years and buy it at bullion. Unfortunately, if a significant number of NCLT customers do the same, the entire mint NCLT product business may collapse.

Yes, this was exactly my point.
Never changing design will not be attractive for a long term (for bullion, not circulation), and starting Wildlife series, RCM started to expand bullion offerings.
And not only the RCM....amazing QB series by Royal Mint or expansion of the Perth Mint to the Silver Kangaroo, WTE, and recent Swan. And if the bullion will start to repeat circulation designs / patterns....

Commems I also look forward to the first SD release of the year. Hopefully there won't be quite as many as last year. I consider my 36mm NCLT collection of SDs an ongoing extension of the first $1 coin released in 1935. It's a part of my total collection and I pay little attention to market values, it's just a hobby to me.

I also remove them from their original boxes or cases, otherwise I think I'd lose interest. Instead I place each in a labelled quadrum holder so they can be conveniently viewed all together at once, from time to time. At first I was a little iffy about the coloured SDs but now I think they make for an interesting conglomeration.

Other than that, NCLT has gotten far to gimmicky for me to "hurry, buy now!" Even the style of RCM's advertising seems to be getting more annoying each year.

When the coins finally available on the RCM website, it was intersting to observe all the variety coins in the subscriptions.

The "Thirteen Teachings From Grandmother Moon - Pure Silver" looks like cute set with some artwork not bad at all.
For the 40%-50% of their price it could be nice set.
(and there is no Howling Wolf?)

Thanks for pointing me to the Untamed Canada Series. I found some photos online. I think these coins would be more appealing if the outer belt (where "Canada 2014" is) is not there. I prefer to see the artwork occupying the whole coin, instead only the inner circle of it. BTW, I don't understand why older coins were designed like that (with inner and outer circles).

Just purchased 10 2018 coins/set from TSC and saved 3% off and free shipping and the option to pay it off at 6 equal payments. A much better deal than the RCM. Sayonara RCM.
