I am new to coin photography, and I wanted to ask if there are recommended cameras to do this, or would any decent point and shoot camera do?

its not a simple question and giving you an answer could be misleading. Many on this forum are USA based so they would likely recommend DSLrs . Those in Europe are more likely to recommend mirror-less cameras. Some here will even say just use your smart phone. It all depends what sort of coin photographs you want... are they for online sales..... illustrating articles. or just for your own records.

Tell us more about why you want to photograph your coins and we can assist you a little better

Also where - a block of wood and a smartphone for on-the-go photos can actually be a pretty good setup.

Actually, my old iPad 2 takes better pictures than my expensive Nikon D3300 camera if I don't want to set up up camera stand.

What is important to me in a camera is the ability to control camera settings, white balance, etc from my PC, view the image I want to take live on the screen before I shoot it, snap the shot with my mouse, and automatically download the image into an editing program for quick adjustments. For higher magnification shots I also place a high importance on Electronic or partially-electronic shutter. I only know of one brand and type of camera that can do these things for a reasonable price...Canon DSLRs. There may be others that can do this and I'm sure others will correct me if I have missed something.

If those things are not important to you, then you should decide what is important and select a camera that can what you want to do. If you make a list I'm sure others here can help you select a suitable camera.
