Reason I looked was that in a 1911 crime story by Fredrick Arnold Kummer, The Green God, some collectors widely travelled in China/Tibet mentioned in passing the Chinese cash (small coins)...
I was intrigued because this appears to me a much more believable derivation than the endlessly repeated references to Latin capsa, French caisse and so on in relation to our word cash.
After all, the Portuguese were assiduous explorers/traders in Asia hundreds of years ago, and they could have brought back the word?
