Slightest touch of circulation rub keeps it at AU-58. But it's a beautiful 58 and appears nicer with better eye appeal than many 60-63.
More importantly, although it's raw, it's never been cleaned or dipped. I am unfamiliar with this variety, but it's certainly a first rate example.

I am glad to hear that it coin is uncleaned. I was fearful of the coin being cleaned when purchasing it since it wasn't aware that it was AU and the color seemed to be off for a MS, but now it makes total sense. I will probably send it in to PCGS once I get a batch to submit since its a higher grade example.

Agree with mox, textbook original AU-58 and just a great example.

Nice pick!....still looking for mine. Ive snagged a few of the 1880 MADs, but no 1889s or 1890s.
Really nice example too! Congrats!

Thank for the input and kind words everyone! Quote: That is a really nice coin! Is that your Christmas present to yourself ? LOL It probably will be! My budget was around 100$ so this will fit in nicely. Quote: Nice pick!....still looking for mine. Ive snagged a few of the 1880 MADs, but no 1889s or 1890s.
Really nice example too! Congrats! Thanks Red Raider. The 1880 MAD is so dramatic! Must be very nice to have plucked a few of from unsuspecting sellers Did you ever sell them or our they in your collection? I think my next target will either be the 1889 MAD or the 1880. I'm always looking for everything, but I've realized that you get most lucky when you really channel your searching energy into one variety. Quote: Although, I should have known from the third pic. I think you were too blinded by the coin's beauty to notice

I wonder What was the giveaway for you when you saw it for sale? The N being smashed on its upper right arm?

Quote: I wonder What was the giveaway for you when you saw it for sale? The N being smashed on its upper right arm? BluegrassRiver, Fortunately, the seller pictures were very sharp (the images I posted are the sellers pics) and I just saw the 2 most prominent denticles popping out. I had been searching for this variety for a long time so after looking at so many normal 1890's, I spotted the difference very easily on this one. I am not sure if the N being smashed on its right arm is a die marker, but it very well could be.
