Why weren't Ike dollars initially included in mint sets? I've always wondered about this.

I just always assumed that the Mint was worried that the higher price of a mint set that was needed due to the Ike's inclusion would have depressed sales. But I don't have any hard data to back that up.

I am not sure, but I seem to recall it being posted before. I will see if I can find it.

Seems like your memory is a bit off, since you were the one who asked last time a little over two years ago.

Hopefully you will remember this time. If not, I will remind you again in 2019.
Rest in Peace

Ike came out fairly late in 1971 after the mint sets were already on sale, and probably too late to arrange for the new sealing lay out needed for 1972. (Back then tooling for sealing dies could take months, and the mint sets went on sale in February.) But they did have enough lead time for 1973.

Even if Force had not forgotten, someone else would have asked eventually.

I remember back at the time thinking it was ironic they couldn't get the Ikes in the '71 and '72 mint sets and then when they finally did in '73 there were none made for circulation.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.
