I believe this is a die crack, however, I am not finding a lot of information on how to tell between a die crack and wear and tear from coins in circulation.

It is a die crack and we have a special name for it.
Since it's coming from the head of the portrait, it's often called a spike-head.

Good job! Great eyes!

Die cracks are raised ABOVE the field (flat areas that surround the design details).
Rest in Peace

it's a spike head! Nice find

Now, check out the link below to see if you can attribute it. (match yours to one there) if you don't see a match, you may send it to them and they will attribute it, photograph it, and eventually list it on their site and you will be credited for it

Tootallious -
So when you say "attribute it" are you talking about giving the coin a reference # for the error? I looked at the site and found SKH-1c-1971D-08, which matches what I posted on the spike head crack. So if I was to list or anything I would want to reference that number?

Sorry, I am just learning.
Rest in Peace

Yes, that's what attributing is, a previously documented reference on one of the attribution sites. Since there is already one, no need to report this as a new variety...get one and you'll be "published", lol1
