Well, thats an interesting opinion, to say the least. I was browsing through the NY Times archives and stumbled upon a headline that caught my eye. (hoo hoo i'm a weirdo who looks at old newspapers)

(P.S: I don't think this is violating rules, is it?)
(P.P.S: the link does include some extras that have nothing to do with the coin)
(P.P.P.S: the extra articles are about a musical festival of some sort, a kid getting lost, and somebody falling off of a church)

original link did not work, see link in post below.

Your link does not work.

And I moved this thread to the US Classic Coin section with the other threads about a 1804 Dollar

I hope this one works. To view the actual article click the blue link "download a high-resolution pdf" at the very bottom of the tan-colored box.

Here's my 1804 "dollar" that's chopmarked, counterstamped. Okay, so technically it's not a dollar, it's an eight real piece that was the equivalent of a buck. A great many of these circulated out west, in the U.S. territories and states.

There are 1804 dollars. They just weren't minted in 1804.

I didn't download the article because I don't like clutter from such sources.

Yep, moxking, there are dollars, retroactively dated 1804. Guess, it all comes down to how we define an "1804 dollar." That's why I posted my version.

I wasn't saying that there weren't any. Thats what the headline of the article said.

(On a mobile device, it doesn't force me to download it, it allows me to preview it in the browser. Whoopsie.)

Yes, moxking ... I was agreeing with you. I didn't read the article, as the link didn't work. I was simply trying to make the point, perhaps poorly so, that figurative ways to describe things in life can cast a cloud on literal definitions.
