Figured I would put it here too and see what you guys think. Quote: Pictured here is a 2005-D LMC with the Chicago White Sox logo counter stamped on it. (Actually I believe that it's not stamped but laser etched.) There are some obvious plating issues where the zinc is exposed to the outside world and the inevitable is happening. I'm curious if anyone has any clever ideas as to how to possibly save the coin. It's not the coin that has any value it's the stamp. If anyone could think of a way to clean the zinc without damaging the plating any further and then figuring out a way to "seal" the coin preventing the corrosion from returning and advancing. I have never seen another one of this particular stamp celebrating the Chicago White Sox's 2005 World Series win before. Any ideas no matter how whacky will be entertained. On 1982 and later Lincoln cents, if the zinc core is exposed to the atmosphere (carbon dioxide), it quickly tarnishes and forms a protective layer of zinc bloom or hydrozincite (zinc carbonate) over any plating splits and helps prevent any further deterioration of the zinc. This is a powdery, white, opaque substance. It is just that if such a coin were to go back into circulation, the protective layer typically gets removed from usage and unable to stay put to protect the exposed zinc which leads to further deterioration (called zinc rot). So as long as you keep it in its 2x2 and left alone and dry it will be fine. I have seen cents with breaks in the plating, lots of exposed zinc around the lettering and devices, and only the same white layer is present but no further deterioration happened over 20 years even with the split plating. Unknown date Jefferson nickel with miniature nickel inserted. 1975 LMC with miniature LMC inserted. Really happy that this one still had the price tag on the 2 by 2.
