This is a 1991 Washington quarter. What could be the cause of the closely spaced letters in the motto?

You will need to post a pic of the alternative coin so people can see any difference. If there is one then it would be the result of different die master.

I just compared your pictures with a number of unc and proof quarters, the motto looks the same to me.

Thank you for your suggestions and feedback. I am attaching comparative photos for better analysis. Please note that the letters IBU are almost hitting each other and so with letters U and M. Also, how do I make the two photos come out with the same KB size?

The appearance of closer spacing can develop as the result of die deterioraton, which causes the letters to get wider and "puffier". Alternatively, the appearance of wider spacing can be due to intentional die abrasion ("die polishing") which thins out the letters and increases the gap between them.

Good morning and thanks for your comments. I would like to inquire if during the minting process the motto and the legend are both struck at the same time, because the letters of the latter are also touching one another.

The entire design of a coin is on two dies and the both sides of the coin are struck simultaneously.

Hi,
In this case, on the two pictures shown above, the upper picture shows the effects of the die polishing that Mike talked about. On your particular coin, the thinner letters were caused by the over abrasion of the die.

Thanks,
Bill
