It has been suggested to me that the raised areas within the E in LIBERTY on this 1956 Franklin half dollar might be die chips. Would you agree with that, or do you think it might be something else? There is post mint damage to the rim and to the E itself, but I don't think it is severe enough to have caused this. If these are die chips...what are they, and what causes them? I looked in the glossary - found die cracks, but no die chips.

I've not spent alot of time looking for error coins, and my knowledge is limited in that area. But, every once in awhile, a coin comes along that doesn't look quite right, so I get out the glass for a better look-see.

I appreciate any help you can give to further my coin knowledge. Thanks.

Ralph

Ralph, not sure what else they could be but chips. That said, I am trying to understand why the "E" is completely separated from the chips. It almost looks like the planchet had a imperfection on it and then was over struck. Hope Chuck or someone weighs in on this one, I will be watching.

Hi,

It does appear to be the result of die chips. They look separated from the bars of the E as that is simply how the die broke out. Just the inner portions of those spots of the die broke away.

Thanks,
Bill

I agree with Bill, The die is opposite the coin, so the areas where the two chips are, are raised on the die. Those two little parts broke off the die, but they do mot break off perfectly level, a small portion remains and that is what has caused the original shape of the "E" to be completed.

Okay guys - thanks.
Think I'll hang onto it - put it aside - just because it's unusual. I appreciate your input.
