This year, I decided to buy a coin for my Christmas gift. Since my wife would not be able to wade through the offerings to find the best, I bought it and had to wait till Christmas to see it. I looked for about a month and picked this out. I can't get great pics so I am posting two different lighting angles: These pics show a few marks that I was initially concerned about (they showed in the seller pics, too). There are diagonal marks near Jeff's forehead and the date, as well as the mintmark on the reverse. After closer examination, I concluded that these are planchet flaws. Notice how they run in the same direction (and appropriately from obverse to reverse) and there is also a tiny lam happening below IN of IGWT that also runs in the same direction. While examining it, I remembered that it is not uncommon for nickel proofs to have a DDO / DDR, so I compared it to the listings on Brian's site and I believe it is this one: https://www2.briansvarietycoins.com...ngs/view/423 I found the tiny die gouge within the lower section of the N in IN. The gouge on the 4 of the date may be there, but it must be very tiny and there are no pics in the listing. The reverse is noted to also be a DD, but I had trouble trying to capture any pics representing it. This is the most I've ever spent on a coin and, I have to say, I am pleased with the outcome and it is an important part of my Jefferson nickel collection! Boy that is really nice! I'm not seeing the doubled tops of the IGWT devices. You have something going on on the lower legs, don't think that's hub doubling, not sure what. There is a shearing MD in southerly direction all over the obverse, lighting will show you whatever you want to see, smoke and mirrors. I see no DDR, slight movement on USA. remember, two chances to get strike errors! Yea, I see the planchet flaws, lines of lamination under the strike. But a 66...whoopee!

Thanks for the comments OldJoe, TNG, Crazyb0 and Mrzllewellyn. I tried to explain to my wife that I was relieved after I discovered that those marks were planchet flaws. As long as it is "As Made", I'm happy. Quote: The rest of the proofs will be a piece of cake. There are a couple others that may be reason for pause, but I agree. I still need a raw '51 and '50 for the album. I could have gotten those, but since the '42-P Type 2 is the only silver Jefferson proof, I gravitated towards it. A couple of the "Reverse of..." proofs are very pricey so they will be ignored for now. One per year is my goal. Quote: But a 66...whoopee! I was actually watching a 67 for a while that probably would have cost me $100 more. It was nice, but after looking at earlier proofs in 67, I realized I couldn't reasonably get all of them in 67. PF-66 is much more doable. Plus, it sold, so that made up my mind for me. So everyone knows, my goal is 1950-2003 proofs raw in the album (2 remaining), and '42 Type 2 and back slabbed in PF-66 (5 remaining). It's actually a bit odd that Dansco and Whitman don't have albums that include proofs before 1971 but an LWC album will have a spot for a plain '22 and '55 DDO. By the way, whether it is a DDO or not, it makes little difference to me. That's not why I got it. If I want a slabbed DD, I'll get one that is naked-eye visible like the 1995 LMC or a '46 WLH.

That is a neat Jefferson! I do think that is the same DD you listed. The 'T' looks like an exact match to me. Your wife sure knows how to pick em

Spruett, from one nickel guy to another....that is a beaut of a coin. I have one of those '42 proofs slabbed, but the condition pales in comparison to yours. Very, very nice! Tough coin to find...only about 27,000 minted if my memory serves correct.

Thanks for the comments, everyone. Quote: Tough coin to find...only about 27,000 minted if my memory serves correct. Yep, 27,600 minted. Only the '42 Type 1 has a higher mintage of any pre-War Nickel proofs. There were 2,000 more Type 1 proofs minted, but it looks like I may be able to get one for nearly half what the Type 2 cost, go figure.
