I saw this one in the auction photos, but didn't dare dream it would be so nice in person!

Mysia, Kyzikos (AKA Cyzicus)
c. 450-400 BC
AR Hemiobol (9mm, 0.42g)
Forepart of boar left, H on shoulder, Tuna behind
Roaring lion left, within incuse square

Mysia,-Kyzikos-AR-Hemiobol

Gosh these things are amazingly detailed for their size!

Greek is very much new territory for me, so any additional information is very much appreciated! From searching around, it seems that the major varieties of this type pertain to the letter on the boar's shoulder (if any) and the presence or absence of any marks above the lion's head.

That is an amazing coin. More detailed and better struck than coins struck much later. An absolute gem. Sincere congratulations.

It always amazes me how well these tiny coins are struck and the degree of detail on them.

Thanks all!

From what I've seen online, the more remarkable detail of this coin is the detailing on the tuna, in particular the definition on the gill and fin. I can't even begin to imagine the skill involved in making these, especially less than 200 years after the invention of coinage!

The prices of these pieces is also impressive- the porosity probably would hold this one back from being a big ticket item, but this is likely the second or third most valuable coin in my whole collection.

Mine doesn't really show the tuna, but is a smaller denomination, it's a couple of mm smaller and significantly lighter. Not as crisp details as yours but amazing that it survives at all considering its scale.

I have an obol (0.8 gr,10mm) with a reversed Kappa above the lions head , the tuna fish indicates the town of Kyzikos .
The letter H on the shoulder is very special , it is the first time I see it and it is maybe the reason for the price .You can check the different types of this coin in the Catalogue of Greek coins in the British Museum , free on internet.https://archive.org/details/in.erne...2015.279811.
