I'm thinking this is just an engraver's error, but worthy of sharing nonetheless.

Gordian III Denarius
IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG, laureate bust right
AETERNITATI AVG (To the Immortal Emperor), Sol standing right, head left, with upraised hand and holding a globe.
RIC 111

Compare against:
Gordian III AR Antoninianus
IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG, Radiate, draped & cuirassed bust right
AETERNITATI AVG, Sol, radiate, standing left with globe.
RIC 83

On the denarius, Sol appears to be wearing the radiate crown, just without the rays. He is radiate on all other examples I can find online.

The antoninianus is very common, the denarius seems to at least be scarce.
Rest in Peace

I wish!

I really can't explain the lack of rays on Sol's crown, since the general area is otherwise too sharply struck--couldn't be a filled die.

Maybe the engraver was an intern and had written on a post-it note: "NO RADIATE CROWNS ON DENARII"

More like a "Papyrus-it Note".

One struck as a Denarius and the other as a Antonininus.

In the description of RIC , the denarius and the antoninianus are identical , the ant. is C3 , the den. R , as you noted .I think Echizento is right and the engraver made a mistake as denarii have no radiate crowns . Two nice and interesting coins, especaily the denarius . Of course, Spence can be right , but then the note was a wax tablet-it note. albert
