I have this 1909S wheatie and am curious if it is genuine or not. Personally, I think it is genuine, but I am no counterfeit spotter.

I can't see the point in faking a 1909 S without just adding a VDB to the back - tons more value. I'm no counterfeit spotter either though, but I don't see a point.

To me, the mint mark looks too crisp relative to the rest of the coin (it kinda "pops" immediately), but yeah... why fake it, especially in this condition.

Maybe this was a practice coin for some budding counterfeiter.

with the above sentiments. The mm does look a bit out of place, but why go through the trouble of faking it?

S certainly looks laid on. The questions asked, citing why not a VDB, might be the very reason why it was created without one.

Die marker checks required.

It looks fine. That is a known position for genuine 1909-S mintmarks and unless you see an obvious seam between the mm and the adjacent field there are no worries. Use a 7X or more powerful loupe at a 45 degree angle to check it.

It looks like a $50 coin to me.

If you can, try a bit of acetone on the MM. In any event, examine it very closely with your magnifier. I think it's probably OK.
