i only have a few modern australian coins and dont really collect them much, but today in the coin machine at work I found a large australian penny from 1942. In effect since I swapped it out for a half dollar I paid 50 cents us$ for it. How rare are these and how much would one be worth in circulated condition?

Depends what mint it was, if there is a dot after Y in Penny then it is the more common Perth Mint.

If there is no dot after Penny it was struck in Bombay, India the less common one.

The guide to Australian Coins and banknotes by Greg McDonald
In Australian Dollars (AUD) $$

Perth Mint (Y.)

Very Good - .50c
Fine - $1
Very Fine - $12
Extra Fine - $38

Indian Mint

Very Good - .50c
Fine - $1.50
Very Fine - $7
Extra Fine - $32

The Perth Mint 1942 penny (Y.) had a mintage of 12 million
The Indian Mint 1942 Penny had a mintage of 9 million, so slightly rare I guess

The Indian mint one has an 'I' mintmark on it somewhere, I tihnk on the obverse under the head.

Spedward is right with his mintage figures, however the Y. is a harder coin to find in higher grades, so commands a premium. An Unc example at catalogue value is $165, where the '42 I is $85.

Perth Mint bronze coins are notorious for being weakly struck during the war years in an effort to extend die life, whether this has anything to do with the values, I am not sure.
