Here's something I found the other day at a show. Here in the US, I have a hard time finding the more interesting Australian coins,
so I was pretty excited to find this in a $1 box!

In the same box, I found a 1922 1d with the Calcutta obverse. It checks against the diagnostics I found here..
If that's true, does this coin have much collector interest? I really need to get myself a catalogue on Australian coins and varieties.

You did extremely well to get a 1939 Roo Ha'penny for $1, you are quite entitled to for a find like that.

That is the Key King George VI Ha'penny.

These values are from the l5th Edition of the Australian coins & Banknotes Guide by Greg Mcdonald, aka "Maccas".

VG $15; F $28; VF $60; XF $200; AUNC $ 550; UNC $1450. Mintage 782,000.

I'm not an experienced grader, but if it was my coin, I'd consider it to be at least F, if not better.

1922 penny data:

VG $.75; F $8; VF $60; XF $175; AUNC $450; UNC $1350: Mintage 12,697,000.

Thank you Nancy for the info...I'm pretty happy about the find!
I also think the coin is a solid f-15.

Hmm...the Krause mintage figures must be off They say 504K
Of course, Krause has been known to be wrong...

The 504,000 figure is probably taken from an older publication of the Renniks Catalogue, latest version of it plus Maccas both show 782,000.

I can't guarantee which figure is correct though. Either way, it's still fairly low compared to the Commonwealth of Aust version at 4.67 mill.

ok thanks, umm theres 3 different types of 1922 pennies, the normal one, the one where the 9 is leaning right and the one with the 9 leaning right and a wider gap between 1 and 9, anyone know of that?

Spedward, and I've been told that '22 pennies have two obverse types, some with the "London" obverse, and others with the "Calcutta" obverse with is apparently scarcer (by how much I'm unsure). Here is some info on determining the obverse type.

Values for both varieties of 1922 Pennies are all lumped in together in Renniks, not really mentioned in the value part of Maccas, so probably the same.

Someone here told me to look for the Calcutta obverse, and I found one at the last show!
I don't know if it's valuable...it's just fun finding stuff!

I have been told this is the best way to sought your 1922 varieties.
quote:Sort by obverse type - Indian/ London = 2 piles.
On the Indian dies, check for CBL reverse and FBL reverse = 2 piles.

Now check obverse lettering on each of these new piles. Could be FBL / CBL obverse =now = 4 piles of Indians.

now for London.
separate as above and get your 4 piles.

Put a normal date one aside - you should have 9 piles now.

Then separate a wide date , an extra wide date and a wide date with spike on tail of nine/ over-date.
That should make 12 different distinct types.

If that isn't enough there are 1922 Indian die first 2 tilts left,
upsets, single prong spurs, Double prong spurs, and triple prong spurs, Cuds, die-cracks, dots and possibly many more.

The Indian or Calcutta Obverse is thought to make up 20% of the total mintage of 1922 pennies.

Is at minimum, a very confusing year

Farnbycoins, wow--that's quite a assortment! Thanks!
Now I'll need to lookup what FBL and CBL mean
