I found this on CL, in Wisconsin and started looking closely at the pictures, I noticed that the larger coins that you could make out some dates with, do not match up with the picture and what's supposed to be in there...... I don't think I will ever understand why people feel it is necessary and okay to do this type of thing. If I ever did want to buy anything, this will keep me from doing it. Experts: Advice for us newbs on how to make sure we are getting what we think we are?

Lol! First bit of advice, just because there is a COA with my signature on it, doesn't mean it'll be real or worth anything. Yea, you read it right. Those COAs are an advertising gimmick of many CoinTV outfits to sell their products...and of course, for you to buy them... ...by copying the original intent of the COA, the authenticity is therefore guaranteed...until one tries to prove it as in this case where coins could have been exchanged by any previous owner. The issuing "company", if still in business, will have some fine print disclaimer that voids their responsibility to back their COA. Reputable firms will honr them, but also have record/means of what was originally packaged. Numismatic objects like this are "exonumia". A broad field of collectables indeed, best left to those who know about them. Just because a product lists "XYZ Famous Mint" as its producer may just mean George in the Zambian Jungle put this "fabulously ancient & wholly certified" group of coins together. Have a safe and "good buy" New Year's!

Sorry, message got half repeated for some weird reason? I've told my Craplist story many times before, just say its one main reason I never leave home without it! http://goccf.com/t/292093&whichpage=3

Crazyb0: You never leave home without what? I definitely don't want to fall into buying something that isn't true and real. But there are a few things I know I will end up probably having to purchase vs finding. I know to stay away from the Bradford and things of that nature. But someone else out there will probably think its cool and boom.....

Freeqgirl, a weapon. I attempted twice to sell bulk Wheat cents on Craplist, first was a no show, second was an attempted robbery, stress attempted, dude decided to walk away with his most precious parts intact. At least he was reasonable...

Oh wow!! Yeah, CL is sketchy at best. I thankfully have never had an issue, but I don't mess around either. Someone was selling an iPad, I asked a lot of questions and when I asked the "golden question" of , find a charger and boot it up.....I never got a response back. LOL! Glad you came out okay from that.

99.9% of coins found within these type of displays are worth face value. They are marketing gimmicks.

@BadThad is 100% correct.
Mostly cleaned, damaged coins "polished up" to look pretty and nearly worthless.

Buy from folks selling here and it's virtually impossible to get taken. Anyone who uses this forum values the knowledge gained. We have people selling some great items right now.
And, no, that's not self promotion since I have nothing listed for sale.

I have bought silver off of CL a couple of times in the Tampa area. The last was about 3 yrs ago, when someone was selling a complete set of Silver Eagles, 1986-2006. I picked up the set at just below spot. That time and each of the ones before (except 1) I always kind of felt like the people I was buying it from weren't the actual owners, or didn't completely understand what they had. I didn't take advantage of them, but I did feel like they potentially had acquired the stuff they were selling by suspicious means at best, and I decided to stop buying from CL for that reason.
I always met them at a parking lot like the mall or Best Buy - somewhere I knew had cameras and lots of people. So if you're buying off of CL - I strongly do suggest that at least.
