Hi folks,
I've been trying to identify some coins from a relative, and struggling to begin learning the art. Can anyone help?

- Coin 10 - medieval Hungary?

- Coin 6 - penny/denar English?

- Coin 1 - haven't a clue

Many thanks for any assistance you can give.

sfj, first welcome to CCF.

Second, I agree that the third coin you posted could be Hungary--most likely 16th or 17th Century, but could be a little earlier. I don't see a date, which makes the case for the earlier timeframe.

Actual measurements might help, but based on the size of your fingernail, I'm guessing that the second coin is a 3 Pence from 16th Century England. Maybe Elizabeth I?

That first coin that you posted is a tough one, and I'm sure that others will weigh in too with their thoughts. My only guess is that the second pic sorta looks like it has the outline of the Virgin Mary if you rotate your pic about 90° to the right. If so, then it *could* be from 14th Century Bulgaria.

Many thanks for your reply, Spence.

Coin 1 (pierced) is 14 to 16 mm across.

Coin 6 (with the cross) is 19 mm dia. Comparing it to online images of Elizabeth I threepennies, I can begin to see a quadrant of the crest on the reverse and perhaps the hint of a head on the obverse - but maybe this is the power of suggestion!

Coin 10 (with the crest) is 11 to 14 mm across. I'm fairly sure now that it is a denar, Hungary, possibly Ferdinand II (early 17thC)

Each of them is less than 0.25 mm thick.

Hi Sfj, maybe you could try putting paper over coin 1 and doing pencil rubbings which might provide some clearer detail of each side for further research?

Thanks, Coaster. Tried pencil rub, but didn't work. Here are a couple more views of coin 1 with two different light/microscope arrangements. Possible head on one side, but angled lines on the other?

I'd wager that Coin 1 is an Ottoman Akce. I think I see the same type of calligraphy as on the ones I used to own, and many of these were holed - apparently the coins were safer if you sewed them to the inside of your clothing.
