i was in my backyard when I thought to move the bricks I had blocking some area of my lawn. I moved four of them. I put my detector or my garret ace 250 on and I checked. It came up as a mess of signals. I dug and I said o my god. a shovel full of silver jfk half dollars. after digging them all out I have counted and documented all of them. I had 60 of the in all ranging from 1964 to 1969 I am sad to tell but I cant upload any pics I might upload some later so happy metal detecting

I love hearing the treasure hunting stories  One of these days I may try doing some hunting with the metal dector once I'm retired and got time. |

Treasurehunter50210.........First of all........what on earth made you think to put a "metal detector" in a spot where these bricks had lain ?....  Why would you do that?..did you have a feeling that something was there ? a sixth sense ?...Was the "pile" conspicuous looking or something ? This topic will be moved soon to the "Metal Detecting forum section" of CCF I'm sure , but I'm dang curious what led you to doing that !..

Awesome! Congratulations! If this was done by the last owner or someone before that, chances are that they buried even more stuff in different places to safely diversify their stash in case anyone ever came looking for it. That person is now you! You might be digging up your entire property, but it might be worth it. Finders keepers, buriers who forget their hidden stashes weepers. Wow, that was a long saying. Best of luck! Let us know what else you find.
BTW: What's a good beginner metal detector that doesn't cost a whole lot? I've been interested in picking one up but never know if I'm buying something over priced or one with too many useless features or not enough features. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I don't have any cool stories about digging up treasure, but I do have a peice of advice.
My grandparents have been in the same house for what must be 300 years at this point. They were depression survivors so they still do things like keep 25k in cash in the mattress, keep a grocery store's worth of canned goods in the basement, etc.
I asked my grandfather if he had any coins he could remember hanging on to or burying or anything. He told me he distinctly remembers going out back with his father as a kid and burying a bunch of old coins.
Unfortunatly he doesn't remember where and they have since put a pool in the backyard which takes up about 70 percent of the property.
Long story short, my advice is to ask your family about any coins they may have. Although my grandfather's coins are probably long gone, I bet there's a ton of silver sitting the backyards of our grandparents out there.

nice finds for sure !.......but I still want to know what led you to even "think" to put a metal detector where you moved a pile of bricks on your own property !

I remember doing something similar as a kid, not the finding but the burying. Our house did not seem to have any hiding places so when I had something that I thought was valuable to me I had a spot in the yard I would hide it in. The money that went in there never lasted more than a week but there is a hide out with about 20 original star wars figures in it.

If I ever get back to my hometown I'm for sure going to beg/borrow/steal a metal detector to look around the house where I grew up. I know for a fact I buried and then forget exactly where 3 rolls of wartime nickels and at least one roll of Mercury dimes (I hate to think what will have happened to the wheats heads that I planted so I'm not going to mention (the multiple rolls of) those). |
