*** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. Titles are Important! ***Ok, I am very new to all this and I got this as change the other day. It appears to be a 1990 P Jefferson nickel, but minted in copper...then struck off center....then if you look at the right light you can see two lapels slightly off and different sizes plus the top of Jeffersons head is a little weird (at the "1 o'clock" area). Could a penny have fallen into a nickel die? I need some information and/or advice..... Thank you!

First of all to the CCF family I'm still learning but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it's a capped die. This error develops when a newly-struck coin adheres to the hammer die. The hammer, or top die, functioned as the obverse die through most of the Mint's history, with the exception of such issues as the Winged Liberty or "Mercury" dime and the Indian Head or "Buffalo" nickel. Beginning in 1992, there was a gradual changeover to a setup in which the reverse die functioned as the hammer die. However, most or all hammer die caps from this year on were still produced in presses in which the obverse die was the hammer die. Therefore, it is perfectly acceptable to refer to these errors as obverse die caps. Some of the more knowlegable should chime in soon and let you know for sure.

@RH, first welcome to CCF. Second, it is highly unlikely that a penny planchet was used to make this coin. Much more likely is that it has stained this color due to environmental exposure. Since the two planchets weigh different amounts, you could easily check to see what you have. As to the other potential mint errors, I'm not seeing anything beyond potentially a slightly mis-aligned die, but will defer to others on that stuff.

Almost had something there. However it does appear to be mostly a well worn coin.

@ Tootallious. We have all been out there that's how we learn. Don't worry if the limb breaks we catch you after the first bounce.
