I've been thinking on this for a few months, between threads started by curious newcomers, Augustuscoin's excellent website, and organizing my own meandering collection. I think it would greatly benefit both this board and our hobby as a whole to have a centralized, organized and designated "Start Here!" thread. I am working on a few threads within my own specialty areas, but I think that between all of us, we could probably cover nearly everything.

Any thoughts on this, one way or another? I'm willing to get the ball rolling, but I have a long way to go before I can speak authoritatively on Greek, Persian, Celtic, Islamic, or Medieval coins. Here's roughly what I have in mind so far:

Ancient coins 101
- Most Common types
- I've heard of (historical person). What coins did they make?
- Yes, they are real
- Yes, you can afford them
- How to spot fakes and abusive practices
- Success stories and tales of caution
- Where to get them; where to start

Survey - Coins of the ancient world

- Parthia
- Persis
- Elymais
- Sassanian
- Others?

Semitic/ Non-Greek
- Phoenicia
- Carthage
- Judaea
- Nabatea
- Himyar
- Others?

Rome
- Early origins
- Republican
- Imperatorial
- Twelve Caesars
- Nerva-Antonine dynasty
- Civil war & Severan dynasty
- Crisis
- Gallic empire, Palmyrene empire
- Tetrarchy

Byzantine Empire

Middle East / Muslim world
- Origins of Islamic coinage
- Umayyad Caliphate
- Abbasid Caliphate
- Expanding influence / Civic coppers
- Under the Mongols
- Post-Mongol

Central Asia
- Samarkand/Sogdia
- Chach & other Tamgha-bearing coppers
- Hepthalite Huns
- Nezak Huns
- Alchon Huns
- Other local types
- Bukhar Hudat types
- Turkic Khaganate

India
- Post- Gupta & Hunnic influence
- Tripartite Struggle
- Rajputs & other minor kingdoms
- Early Islamic types
- South India - Minor dynasties
- Chola Empire
- Delhi Sultanate
- Other Sultanates? (I haven't branched out here much)

China

That list is still very much a WIP, but it's a start. I would be curious to know what everyone thinks, and if we could make this a serious endeavor for 2018-2019?

Question: would a thread be more appropriate than creating a downloadable PDF like have been posted? Perhaps a joint endeavor to create a pdf book covering your outline topics?

Either way I would read that thread or PDF. Great idea you are proposing.

The sticky section on Books, downloads and websites cover just about all the areas pointed out. I recommend to all new members to check out the section first.

Ron is too modest to say it, but I think that this one in particular is a pretty useful primer:
