This is the latest from my dads colonials and is one of the better grades he has. I need a little help identifying it. I was thinking this is an 8-X but am not entirely sure. Also, what grade would you put it at? Does the obv die crack or what ever caused the impression on the Rev detract from its look. On a side note...In my opinion the fugios are one of the better looking coloinals. The story and look of them are fantastic.

Can't wait to hear opinions of what's going on at 1 o'clock on the reverse.

This is bogus, a total picture enhanced coin. IMHO.

bPoc1, I am not sure what you mean by bogus. That the picture isn't real or coin? Either way, I took the pic with the wifes tablet, I tried to get as much light on the coin as I could so you could see the coin and all the details.

Bookermg, I too look at the coin thinking just what am I looking at? Something isn't right but not being an expert IDK. That pressed area appears to me to be the obverse die with the "O" on it but to have struck in the press would have changed the reverse image. This indicates to me some object was pounded into the coin without reverse damage for the amount of force necessary to make that indention, (damage not lined up?)seems an impossibility. Jury's still out, need some colonial experts on this one. Either the pix or coin seems doctored.

Crazyb0 I agree with your thought the depressed area could be part of the obverse die with the "O", but I disagree with you in I don't think that it was done post mint with the theory that it would have changed the opposite sides (obverse) image. If it was you would see either see a flattened area at that spot on the opposite side or a raised area. You see neither just greater detail of the Obverse image and some "spilling out" of the planchet from the die. Because the obverse image isn't changed is why it makes me think it was done when it was minted.as if something was in the die. It is also right at the spot of the die crack on the obverse.which is typical for the 8-X variety (or at least that's what I think it is). I am curious of others thoughts as well and if this is an 8-X. And to clarify the coin is much darker in hand and I did not doctor the picture.or coin for that matter.

gorgeous coin with attractive surface preservation and sharp details, i'd guess no less than a strong EF grade the depression with a letter is a brockage and is in fact an error, a struck coin was on top of it when it was struck leaving a nicely incused image of the overlapping coin not only do you have a great example of a fugio, but also one with a great mint error! awesome coin!
I'm not an expert on these so lets see how I did compared to the more knowledgeable haha

Thanks thedollarman, I am not an expert either and was curious what the more knowledgeable on the subject had to say, you are more knowledgeable than me and I am hoping you are correct.
To answer your question steviegetz (I dont know how to copy your response), he mainly collected Canadian and Maritime pieces but he a few colonials he bought in bulk 50 years ago or so ago from one dealer. I am slowly making my way through them, trying to identify the varieties. He loves hearing about what everyone has to say...which keeps him engaged.
What I have gone through: 2-Voce Populi (N-4, N-10) 3 Vermont (RR-3, RR-27, RR-37 (graded)) 1 Massachusetts (I think 1-A or B) 2 Kentucky (plain, Lancaster edge) 2 Fugio (this 8-x, and I am not sure on the other) 6 George Washington (ship token, unity states, NW HP, Sm and Lg military bust) 9- New Jersey (two 6-D, 14-J, 39-A, 46-E, 47-E, 48-G, 53-J, 64-T) 2 Nova Const (crosby 1-A, 2-B)
What I haven't yet gone through or identified: 1 Colonies Francoises 1 Rosa Americana 1 Rhode Island ship token 3 Virginia HP 16 Connecticuts and a few Woods Hibernia
I have learned quite a bit going through all of these, but it has been slow as I don't have all the reference material needed to identify them. The internet only goes so far. This site continues to be a big help, and I thank everyone for that. I have pics of most except for the woods (will get those soon) if there any that you would like to see posted let me know. I have already posted a couple of them.
I will probably have this one graded as well as a couple of the NJ...but keep the comments coming.

You will want to pick up a copy of: Whitman Encyclopedia of Colonial and Early American Coins
It has a nice feature which matches reverses to obverses, meaning you can narrow down a specific variety easier.
That is a nice coin. It would be worth paying for the restoration via NCS to get that bit of green oxidation sorted early.

Stevie, I added a post with all his NJ. I am trying to figure out a way to better display them. I have seen some peoples post with creative ways to show the different ones.I am just not there yet. Link to post. http://goccf.com/t/305844#305844Thanks 52Ray.I had posted one of them and added the other Kentucky to that post. Link to post. http://goccf.com/t/299570#299570Halfwit, I had been meaning to get the Whitman, you pushed me over the edge.it already has come in handy. I would be open to NGC do the restoration, I am just gun shy. I worry if it would do more harm (value wise). Curious if anyone else has done it and not had an issue when they went to sell the coin.
