1982 commemorative 5 francs for the centenary of the Gotthard Railway. This line took ten years to build and was the first rail link between Northern Switzerland and Italy. It includes spiral ramps, numerous bridges and the nine-mile Gotthard Tunnel, which was the longest rail tunnel in the world at the time it was built. The Gotthard Railway is still an important European freight and passenger route, although much of it has now been superseded by a modern line on a new alignment, with a long base tunnel opened in 2016.

The 1982 5 Francs has a reverse design similar to the 5-franc coins in circulation at the time the railway was built. As for the obverse design...

Beautiful coins, plonker!

Here's a contrast: a gold 10-franc coin of 1913 and a bimetallic one of 2004!

An 1851A (Paris) 2 rappen. From 1850 through 1890, these were struck for only 10 of those years.

This thaler from Zürich is impressive for the early use of the roller press by the pioneering mintmaster Hans Jakob Stampfer circa 1560.

Here are a couple of my commemorative pieces for Swiss shooting festivals. Both pieces were struck at the Swiss Mint at Bern.

yes indeed! it could well be one of the most beautiful coins of the 16th century, beautifully made - very nice piece

@tdziemia : spectacular coin too with nice portraits of ruler and bear and eagle

discussing bears and eagles ...

below is a curious large silver coin of Sankt Gallen:
a 1619 taler klippe, with the typical bear of the city and crowned double-headed eagle
almost a perfect square (see black background) while hand cut
the patina is quite nice, the bear and eagle too, a bit of weakness in the strike which is a pity

The round taler from the same date seems more common than the klippe taler. Does anyone have a good reference for the rarity index of swiss coins of this period?
