This is an intriguing piece, weighing a full troy ounce of plata pura ("pure silver") and struck in extreme relief by the government's Mexico City mint. Diameter is 41.8 mm.

It clearly marks the 1980 centenary of something, and for whatever reason bears what looks to me like Hebrew characters.

The legend in Spanish on the incuse side I translate as (more or less), "Give me a fish, and I'll eat for a day. Teach me to fish and I'll eat for my entire life."

An oddity to be sure, but I imagine somebody here is going to know just what it is.

I'll give it a shot. If I could translate the Hebrew, it would be much easier! (unless it's the same as the Spanish )

Between the dates is "ORT".

O.R.T. is the Obchestvo Remeslenogo Truda, or "Association for the Promotion of Skilled Trades". It is a non-profit global Jewish organization that promotes education and training in communities worldwide.

It was founded in 1880 in St. Petersburg, Russia. It is now called World ORT as there are several branches and countries involved. ORT Mexico was established in 1965.

This may also be related to ORT Argentina or ORT Uruguay as they were founded much earlier (1936 and 1942, respectively) and were the first schools of the kind established in Latin America.

I have no idea what building that is as it could be in St. Petersburg or one of several Latin American countries/cities.

Maybe that's on the right track.
