The US Congress just approved a bill HR 5872 requiring the US Mint to issue up to 300,000 $1 coins to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America in 2010. http://www.opencongress.org/bill/110-h5872/show . This is a major triumph for those of us who have Scouting backgrounds, are members of CCF, and have been lobbying for such an issue for some time. Persons, a job well done! I didn't know about this either, but it's certainly welcome news!
I too earned the Coin Collecting merit badge, and later on was a merit badge counselor for same.

Guys, thanks for the welcome back but I'm only here for a short time in between radiation zaps for my latest cancer. I'll try to check in more often but no guarantees. I'm down more often than I'm up. Main reason I checked in this time was because the Scouting subject matter means so much to me.

"... I did get a Coin Collecting Merit Badge!" Coin collecting? And I thought Scouts was about blowing things up? At least it was for our troop! Nice coin!

This is great !...My nephew will be an Eagle Scout someday I guarantee you.....His dad is seeing to it ! He, in fact, very soon is going to a big scout camp in Colorado.......they go every year. His dad is a Doctor, but sees to it that he can go with his son to these things "Scout related" all of the time.....and goes camping once a month with them, etc. etc....he himself was an Eagle Scout, Bronze star in the Army in the first Gulf War, medical school, and now an Internal Medicene Doctor, his son (my nephew) is super bright.....tests in the top 2% in reading and other studies in the country.....goes to a private school......but he's just an incredible 12 year old kid !....wants to be an officer in the military like his dad was too.....I'm getting him in to coin collecting and he will just LOVE this coin ! Does anyone think this will be such a "popular coin" with all the scout leaders accross this country in all of the little towns to all of the suburbs and large cities.....that it might be hard to get for those who aren't on the ball quickly? I think it might just be one of those "coveted coins" that will sell out in 5 or 6 hours........I'm gonna get two and give one as a gift if I can. 2010......hummmmm......what will the price of silver be when they go on sale ?.....this coin could be a $65.00 - $70.00 Silver Dollar by then ! MorganFred........Thanks for the info.. ...I'm sorry to hear about your cancer.....I hope you regain your full health and strength.......I haven't had the pleasure of knowing you before this topic on CCF, buy you have my prayers, friendship, and well wishes anyway !...... Live Strong friend !...

Quote: And I thought Scouts was about blowing things up? That might have been the case when I lived in the South, but I won't tell! When I lived up North or out West, it was more about camping and playing Capture the Flag!

Yes we did that too! Then there were the campouts at a local army base. Live military ordnance + scouts = bad idea. Btw, any developments regarding the mail?

That's worrisome--sorry! I can only hope it makes its way back home, then I'll send it again.

Each Boy Scout $1 coin will have a $10 surcharge and the run will be limited to 350,000 coins. Read the legislation.
Therefore only 1 Boy Scout in 10 could even have one and the coins will never be in general circulation. The public will never see them and never care. The $3.5 million surcharge profit will go to the Boy Scout Foundation. So this is totally self-serving to BSA national with no use to local units or Scouts themselves.
I was hoping to buy a hundred or so and spend them into general circulation for the promotion of Scouting. The centennial UK 50p coin was in general circulation for all to see and use.
I'm sad to see such a narrow misuse of what could have been a wonderful public display of Scouting.
