What do you think? I'm not talking about the Washington or Sacagawea reverse, Presidential dollars or similar miscellaneous hanky-panky with the Jefferson nickel. I mean a complete redesign of the entire denomination, which means saying bye-bye to Lincoln, Jefferson, Roosevelt, Washington or JFK. Which one will be the first to go and why do you think that?

Washington one Cent coin. Roosevelt Nickel. Kennedy Dime. Jefferson Quarter. Lincoln Half Dollar. Dollar coins will then be made as large as a dollar bill is now with Calvin Coolidge on them. OR all coins will be eliminated and replaced with all plastic stuff. OR........

Moving the presidents around... that's actually a great idea! I think politicians don't want to introduce re-design legislation because they don't want to be remembered as the guy who took Lincoln off the penny. Here's a way to have your cake and eat it, too!

The next change could be horrific. Looking at some of the recent commemorative issues there are certainly some historic and beautiful examples, but there are also some woofing dogs.

There will not be any major design changes to the obverse of the coinage other than the dollar coin until coins are obsolete. There are way too many political considerations, Republicans will cry over losing Lincoln, Democrats will fret over losing Kennedy and Roosevelt and the Jefferson nickel is codified from being changed on either side. Washington ain't going anywhere either.

I think they will definitely replace Roosevelt or JFK next if I was a betting man I'd say, Roosevelt, if for no other reason than he's been there forever. Time to give Ronald Reagan his due.

I'd like to see the US get away from using presidents and back to allegorical figures such as Liberty, and only use the presidents on commemorative issues and NCLT.

I think the Statue of Liberty would make an excellent obverse!

Whatever they do, they need to get some real artists/sculptors to do the job. So much of the recent "art" has really been hideous.

I have zero faith in our Congress to do anything productive other than continue taking money from lobbyists.

Agreed none of them are going anywhere. JFK is the most likely if one were to happen as no one but collectors cares about half's, but the fact that no one but collectors cares is exactly why it probably won't happen. You'd really need to see a big public push for any of them to go, the type of push where they think changing it will get them more votes not just some collector push.
If it was up to me I'd do the dime. It's bland and hasn't changed in forever. But also like mentioned we need to be careful what we wish for as the art they're currently putting out could easily not be an improvement.

I too would rather see a move away from Presidents and/or historical figures. If I had to bet though, we'd see a minority on a coin before that happens, as in someone along the lines of a MLK or BHO. The use of Franklin, Susan B. Anthony and Sacagewa are recent proof that Presidents aren't the only consideration. I'd much rather see lady liberty, or other symbolic art that depict the pursuit of liberty and freedom. I love the ASE design, but using it as is for coinage isn't the best choice because it already exists. The Statue of Liberty, updated Lady Liberty artwork, updated shields, etc.

The next major coin design change will be...
Making the cent out of sugar, with a M&M like coating.

I'd love to see a change to symbolic/allegorical figures on our coins but I don't think it will ever happen. We haven't had a new person on the obverse of the "main" circulating coins (not counting dollars) since 1964, and if you don't count halves, then it's 1946. The public just doesn't care about coin design anymore. I hate to say that but I believe it's true. If the Mint quit striking coins completely for five years, other than stuff for collectors, I doubt anyone outside of our hobby would even care.

There is no way they will every get approval to change as long as you can put a D or an R after a subjects's name. A return to Liberty is probably the only thing that has a bipartisan shot of happening.
