I know there have been a few individual threads for low serial numbers but I haven't seen a main one for everyone to post to. So, let's start with this. Coinfrog renewed my interest in low s/n's a little while back with his #2 $20 from MI. I've been looking for one since and now picked this one up at the FUN auction. I'm real happy with it, as I love the Eagles anyway. It may be a while before I actually get it so I didn't want to wait to post.

Thanks, guys. When it comes to "looking for" unusual notes, I'm mostly looking at auctions but I really need to search local flea markets and get some stacks from local banks, too. I guess I'm a little lazy that way, too.
Nice low number, Techwriter. Must've been a million of those SCs printed.

Those are some really cool s/ns, clarenze30!
Coinfrog, you have some great stuff, for sure. Can I see the back, too? I suspect the super low numbers made people put them aside and so we have these superb gems today.

clarenze - That $50 star is just plain cool, as I've said before.

ron - I'll set up the back in awhile.
I've informally kept track of single digit s/n $1 Black Eagles and X-Back USN notes that I've come across for many years. If I had to guess, I'd say that at least the first 100 notes of every block starting with the Parker/Burke sigs through the end (Speelman/White sigs) were put aside initially for the usual reasons (this was a very popular and affordable note among collectors from the beginning). I have not seen nearly as many single notes from earlier sig combos. A large majority of these were no doubt eventually absorbed back into circulation, but very large numbers are still around for sure - I have recorded more than 80 in the last 5 years without going to any extended effort.
What's interesting is the variety of conditions these notes are in. Many are circulated and others are now AU because of mishandling. Many are also 63s and 64s based largely on centering, which at first surprised me - I had figured on higher grade notes with more consistency in an initial print run. Not.
I don't believe the low s/n X-Backs were put aside with the same frequency, but I could be wrong because I've not always looked for (or inquired about) them.
