Has anyone ever heard of a Buffalo Black Beauty?... Neither have I. I've had this for years in an old Whitman album. Thought I'd run it past you guys. My first thought was chemical, environmental damage or someone took a blow torch to him. The edge seems to show nickel. Not sure if the Black Beauty specs calls for the black to go through-and-through the coin? Your thoughts...

It's simply toning of a deep coloration.

Black Beauties can be created without much skill by baking a nickel in a little oil for a period of time.

Those fake black beauties are on ebay pretty frequently.

As such, the appeal for black colored nickels has not been too great.

Annealing is just the heating of the metal then cooling it slowly and the dark color is only on the surface from over heating. I never heard of a black beauty Buffalo but I imagine someone could make one in their work shop. Here's one I made to prove the point - used torches and let air cool, you can see the scratch I made into it is silver colored.

I ran in the Black beauties several times from Shield to the V`s, Buffalos and Jeffersons and other coins with similar alloys. Clad coins do that also
I had a bunch of Buffalo and Jeffs when Dads lounge burned down and the nickel slot machines still had the coins but most were melted together and the few I saved were black toned. I had several pounds we took to the bank. 1959 was fire date

The best find was a 1890 CC Morgan the fell between a crack in the bar stools
