This quarter stood out in my pocket change the other day. After looking closer it looks to me like maybe Zinc? No idea, but it feels rough as well.

Any ideas?

There is no way it's made of zinc. It is surely the victim of environmental damage.

i'd be inclined to say environmental damage, too, but what's the reeded edge look like? can kind of see it in the one photo, but not enough to give an opinion on. is the reeded edge the same, covered with that 'corrosion'?

Didn't mean to say it was completely made of zinc...it resembles parts we used to send out to be zinc coated. The weird sparkly but dulled finish, the rough surface, etc. Plus the corrosion or whatever it is is very uniform.

The reeded edge does not seem to have the same corrosion.

Another possibility is that someone grit blasted it. @Scott20015, it is an interesting coin, so save it if you want, but it's only worth face value.
