Last night I was bought some quarters from my significant other. In them was this quarter that looks like a proof 1989 P Washington quarter. I also noticed that on the front the rim was thicker on top and thinner at the bottom. The Lower part of the rim where the 9 of 1989 was much thinner. On the reverse side, the thin spot is between the A in America and the R in DOLLAR. Two other things I notice about this quarter is that the A in DOLLAR is filled, as well as the word itself having thick tops seem to tapper down especially in the letters Half of the O middle of the LLAR then seem to rise at the the lower part of the letters. Any one know of any errors if this type for that year coin? One thing I did find was info that the reverse side could be off 100 to 120 degrees from center.

This is a Proof Washington quarter:

Not a proof, as proofs have only been struck at San Francisco since the late 1960s. It's a high grade business strike; a fairly uncommon sight these days. I would set it aside, as quarters circulate heavily for long periods, and the supply of higher grade clad coins is starting to dry up. Most likely, this one spent a long time in a collection (or a very old change jar) and was dumped recently.

to the forum!

Proof coins are a type of coin, not a grade.
They are struck using special dies with a polished mirror like or frosted finish. Modern Proof coins are struck at the San Francisco mint and bear an S mint mark.

Thank you for the replies. I,m in SW FL. A lot of famous customers as well as tourists from all over the World visit this restaurant. (Japanese Steak House) Never know what is going to show up there. I agree it looks to be a regular coin in very good condition. The off center is obvious even without a Loupe. I,ll put it with my other irregular coins.
Rest in Peace
