Sorry if this has been asked and answered before; couldn't find with search.

I know th US Mint started adding the P mint Mark on SBA dollars in 1979 and all other coins (except cent) in 1980. What I can't find out is WHY they decided to do that. Just curious, but because I can't find the answer I'm pretty much obsessed now.

Thanks for listening.

Jan

Good article about it.
A good article, thank you for sharing!

However, it does not answer the question, "Why?"

I wonder of Conder or Cladking have the answer.

I too agree a great article. And true it does not answer why. I know wonder about the location of a Mint Mark as to why it is were it is?

It is much easier for collectors, that is for sure.

I don't know of an official reason as to why the P was added in 1979 to the SBA. It may be because they were making such a fuss over the new small dollar, they didn't want to have to keep answering the question as to why some of them had mintmarks and some didn't. (The average person doesn't really look at their coins and don't notice the differences in mintmarks, but the SBA's were constantly in the news.) After the SBA, it was a small step to adding it to the rest of the coins other than the cent, but still no "official" reason other than "because we are".

I read that the reason why was because it would make the Philadelphia mint employees feel better represented in the Coin World. The other mints have mint marks--why can't we? The powers that be just wanted to give their workers a lift.

Maybe they made a change to coin dies around that time and felt it would be easier to just add the P to all coins at that time. I'm still researching it

I think they should keep it on the cent.

I honestly do not care either way. They should stop minting cents for circulation.

Me too. However, there is a good possibility no one really knows.
